{"id":2296,"date":"2011-06-30T20:15:02","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T00:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/?p=2296"},"modified":"2011-11-15T17:59:06","modified_gmt":"2011-11-15T22:59:06","slug":"the-three-sisters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/index.php\/2011\/06\/the-three-sisters\/","title":{"rendered":"The Three Sisters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 800 years ago the native American Iroquois people developed and employed a \u201ccooperative\u201d way of planting their three main crops:\u00a0 corn, beans and squash\u2014known as \u201cThree Sisters.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If planted close\u00a0together, the corn would provide a stalk upon which the beans would climb.\u00a0 The beans would provide essential nitrogen to the soil and the large squash leaves would provide a ground cover to prevent the growth of unwanted plants and weeds.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re pairing\u00a0two of the\u00a0three sisters together this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2299\" style=\"margin: 3px; border: black 1px solid;\" title=\"Squash1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Squash1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/>We grow rows and rows of butternut squash to allow proper garden space (after growing butternut for\u00a0more than\u00a010 years, I am still amazed at the amount of space the squash will eventually require).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2298\" style=\"margin: 3px; border: black 1px solid;\" title=\"Squash2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Squash2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/>The beans are nestled close to the corn, and once trained, will likely be very happy to hitch a ride on the cornstalks.
