The air was filled with the spits and sputters and little puffs of smoke from hit-and-miss engines. Crowds gathering and dispersing among the many historical displays.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1442\" title=\"cornsheller\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cornsheller.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>As we strolled past a corn sheller, the gentleman operating it pointed to Nathaniel and said, \u201cYoung man, your mom wants to make corn bread!!\u201d\u00a0 Nathaniel looked up, quizzingly, as the man repeated, \u201cshe needs your help\u2014go on out and gather a bushel of corn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached down and pulled up a handful of ears and handed them to Natalie. \u201cShell &#8217;em,\u201d he directed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1444\" title=\"cornshelled\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cornshelled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1447\" title=\"cornmilling\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cornmilling.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cornmilling.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cornmilling-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>You can imagine they were both smiling by now as Natalie cranked the wheel and Nathaniel added the corn. Once the mill chewed the kernels off, they began spilling out the chute.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cYou&#8217;re not done yet!\u00a0 Mom can&#8217;t make cornbread out of this!\u00a0 You need to mill it\u2014grind it up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1450 alignleft\" style=\"margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"cornmilled\" src=\"https:\/\/www.homegrownonahobbyfarm.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/cornmilled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/>So they gathered the kernels and put them down the mill chute and began to crank. The bowl caught the light, yellow, cracked and milled corn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood job,\u201d he said, \u201cnow take this in to mom. She\u2019s in the kitchen waiting for it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We thanked him for such an interesting and fun demonstration. Other children had now gathered to give it a go and we slowly made our way to the next display.<\/p>\n<p>I glanced back as I remembered shelling corn with my grandfather to give to the wild geese that gathered on his pond every year around this time making their way south.
